If you've got an Equinix interview coming up for a Critical Facilities Engineer or Data Center Customer Operations Technician role, here's what candidates publicly report about the process — including one step that catches people off guard if they're not expecting it.

The process at a glance

Based on aggregated candidate reports, the Equinix hiring process typically takes around two weeks and is generally rated approachable to moderate in difficulty. A common flow: you apply online, then — and this is the step to be ready for — some candidates receive a HireVue video interview invitation.

Be ready for the HireVue screen. Instead of a live first-round call, Equinix sometimes sends a link to a one-way video interview: you're shown a question on screen and record your answer on camera, often with a limited number of retries per question (candidates report about three tries each). It's not a live conversation, which throws people who expect one — so it's worth setting up somewhere quiet, with decent lighting, and practicing talking to a camera beforehand. After the HireVue screen, the process typically moves to interviews with the hiring team and site leadership.

What the interview actually covers

Expect a mix of fundamentals, technical, and behavioral questions — weighted toward your track (facilities vs. customer operations).

1. Data center fundamentals
Candidates report being asked genuinely basic-sounding openers like "What is a data center?" Don't overthink these — they're checking that you understand the environment and can explain it clearly. A strong answer touches on what a data center does (houses and protects mission-critical IT infrastructure), and ideally shows awareness of tiers and redundancy (e.g., that higher-tier facilities have redundant power and cooling paths and very high availability targets). Showing you grasp why uptime and redundancy matter sets you apart from someone who just recites a definition.

2. Technical questions tied to your role
For the Critical Facilities Engineer track, expect questions about the critical infrastructure you'd maintain: UPS systems, generators, BMS, chillers, CRAH units, HVAC, and life-safety systems. Be ready to talk about hands-on maintenance, following MOPs (Methods of Procedure), responding to incidents, and escalation protocols. For the Customer Operations Technician track, expect more on cabling, cross-connects, circuit installs, and hardware/"smart hands" support.

A common scenario-style question across data center roles: how you'd respond to a failure — say, a cooling unit going down. A strong answer is structured: escalate to facilities engineering while implementing short-term mitigations (portable cooling, migrating load off the affected area), then document the timeline, root cause, and corrective actions for the post-incident record. They want to see you stay calm, protect the critical environment, and follow procedure.

3. Behavioral questions
Standard behavioral ground: why Equinix, how you work in a team, how you handle pressure, and — one candidates specifically report — "If you were to leave a job, what would be the reason?" Equinix emphasizes coordination and teamwork heavily (the role involves working with vendors, customers, and multiple internal teams), so examples that show communication and collaboration land well.

How to prepare

• Set up for the HireVue screen. If you get the video interview, treat it seriously: quiet space, good lighting, look at the camera, and rehearse concise spoken answers. Use your retries but don't over-record — natural beats over-polished.
• Nail the fundamentals. Be able to clearly explain what a data center is, and ideally reference tiers and redundancy. It's an easy way to look prepared.
• Know your systems (CFE track). Be conversant in UPS, generators, BMS, chillers, CRAH/HVAC, and life-safety systems, and be ready to describe hands-on maintenance and MOP-driven work.
• Practice the failure-scenario answer. Structure it: protect the environment, mitigate, escalate, document. Calm and methodical wins.
• Emphasize teamwork and communication. Equinix repeatedly stresses coordination — bring examples of working across teams, with vendors, or with customers.
• Prepare for shift-work questions. Many roles include weekends, holidays, and shift coverage. If you're flexible, say so.

The Equinix data center interview is approachable if you come in with genuine hands-on experience, a clear grasp of data center fundamentals, and a calm, procedure-first approach to problems.
